Causes of infertility
There are a number of causes of infertility, which can be divided equally between men and women. Even so, many of the causes remain unknown.
The woman’s age is the most decisive factor in a couple’s fertility. After the age of 36 or 37, the number of eggs falls faster and after 40 women experience more difficulty in conceiving.
Male problems account for 35% of the causes of infertility. They include a low sperm count and poor-quality sperm cells. In addition to a low sperm count, there may be a reduction in motility or normal sperm cells or even a complete absence of spermatozoa.
In another 35% of cases, the problem lies with the woman. The most frequent cause is ovulation disorders, but obstruction of the fallopian tubes is also quite common. Diseases of the uterus can also contribute to infertility. They include fibromyoma, congenital abnormalities in the shape of the uterus, changes in the uterine cavity, unfavourable cervical mucus, endometriosis and multiple miscarriages due to hormone or immune alterations or congenital malformations of the uterus.
The remaining 30% is due to cases (20%) in which both members of the couple contribute to a greater or lesser extent to the infertility problem and others (10%) in which there is no apparent reason for infertility, known as unexplained infertility.
When to
seek help
With a greater spread of information in recent years, the taboo and social stigma surrounding this topic, has decreased and more couples seek more quickly the necessary help. The question that arises, then, is when to seek this help. As a rule, infertility should deserve medical research at the latest after a year of regular sex life without contraceptive and without pregnancy. In the case of couples in which the woman is over 35 years old or if there is any pathology that conditions fertility, research should start after a maximum of six months of regular sex life without protection.
