“After 3 months I got the best news of my life. Now I can’t imagine us without our twins.”

I believe that I am representative of a generation of women who have been successively postponing the maternity project. Due to a number of reasons related, on one hand, to life conditions itself and, on the other, to a new way of facing the challenge of becoming a mother.

For a few years I gave priority to my academic project and then to the professional. I became more selective and the people I’d been in relationships with seemed to never meet my requirements. In short, the conditions seemed never to be met. And time went by. Then came new professional and personal challenges, resulting in a change of country. And time went by.

It was only at the age of 41 that I decided to start trying. I confess that at that time I had low expectations. These were feeding on every comment regarding a woman, known to someone, who was a mother at 40. The truth is that my fears had a foundation and the difficulty of getting pregnant was already obvious, to the point that we decided to seek help from fertility experts. That’s when we reached AVA Clinic.

This was probably one of the most complicated stages of my life. First, the acceptance of my fertility problems, to which was joined some guilt for the excessive wait. Then the realization, cold, that it could objectively be an impossible project… although I understand that maternity is not decisive in the sense of the realization of a woman, the truth is that I felt that if I did not come to overcome this situation, something very important would remain to do in my life. At some point, biology always seems to speak louder. Luckily, my relationship with my husband has not been negatively affected by it. Throughout this phase, we have managed to stay close, which has been decisive throughout this period.

Adoption, although it was a possibility in our lives, was not a very realistic possibility. We heard about 5-year waiting lists, with much younger couples. After a while, we chose to go for IVF, on medical recommendation. The chances of getting pregnant were not high and there was a real chance of having to repeat the process, which in my case took about 3 months. The procedures involved in IVF require some courage, for the emotional wear we are subject throughout the process. My greatest fear was to face another disappointment as our resistance was decreasing. But there was psychological support throughout the procedures, which helped a lot. But the fundamental thing is to believe.

Fortunately, I did not have to worry about secondary issues such as financial issues. Because I had already exceeded 38 years, I had to go to a private institution, but that was no problem, contrary to what happens to other couples who want to do IVF.

After 3 months I got the best news of my life. Now I can’t imagine us without our twins. Adding to the great joy of having them with us is a huge sense of realization, typical of won fights. And this is the message I want to leave to all couples who may be facing similar difficulties. As complicated as the scenario is, be sure to explore all possibilities. The moment they are born all previous difficulties are gone.

“When the news of infertility came up in our life it was like the whole world fell at our feet…”

Being parents was for us much more than a dream… it was part of our life project. AVA Clinic appeared on our way in a desperate search for help to solve our problem… and today we recognize that there was a divine hand that put us on this path.

The process (ICSI) was not easy, but thanks to the high professionalism of the entire team at AVA Clinic, everything went well, and the end of this story was the happiest possible.

There’s a phrase in a fado song that marked our life forever – ” there are days that mark the soul and life of people…”  The 1^st and 14^th of October 2010 and the 23^rd of May 2011 are three dates that are forever recorded in our lives.

1^st of October – embryo transfer day
14^th of October – day when we got the news “Congratulations, you are pregnant”
23^rd of May – date of birth of our prince

When we heard the heart of our prince for the first time we couldn’t contain the joy, and our hearts really wanted to explode with happiness.
Today we have a beautiful, wonderful boy. A much desired and loved son!

Our most sincere thanks go to the whole team at AVA Clinic, especially to Dr. José Cunha, to the embryologist Ricardo Miguel and to the embryologist João Lourenço (uncle João).

In addition to fulfilling our greatest dream, AVA Clinic also put in our way wonderful people, friends who entered our lives and we will never let out, like the embryologist João Lourenço, whom today we call uncle João. If there are people in the world with a huge heart and able to perform miracles, these people work at AVA Clinic.

Another fundamental pillar in this process was our family and our friends, who were always by our side, never letting us lose faith and always forcing us to believe that God exists and he was with us on our journey. Thank you all!

To finish, we want to leave a word of faith, courage and hope to all couples who, like us, need “help” to make the dream of being parents come true! Never put your arms down… fight! The final result will be your greatest trophy… your greatest joy! Best of luck to all and best wishes.

When you get pregnant with a child (common thing for most mortals) it’s hard to explain the feeling in your heart after going through so much. In our case, there were many treatments involved, that after some sorrows ended in success. AVA Clinic was the last place found, after knowing everything and everyone else, and hope being so frail. We will never forget the dedication, affection and trust, of the professionals of the clinic, transmitted throughout our journey. Today, looking back, we recognize that it was not easy, but our final result was and still is, the greatest joy of our life.

It was not an easy and linear process. It took the intervention of the power of God and the commitment of wonderful and gifted professionals working at AVA Clinic.

We got to AVA with our hearts broken but hopeful. We had already gone through 2 pregnancies with a sad and very painful ending. But the desire to be parents was greater than any difficulty, tears or suffering.

Suffering that ended the day we received the happy news that I was pregnant, and that we would confirm listening to this sound that I will never forget… the beating heart of our little Afonso.  We went through many stages, doubts and fears but it was worth not giving up. I would go through everything again to be able to witness the happy ending of this journey… a beautiful boy, a baby much dreamed, desired and conquered with faith, perseverance and effort.  Nothing is impossible for those who believe. Thank you first of all to God, for the wonderful gift that is parenting this beautiful and sweet baby. Second to all professionals who with their dedication, affection and knowledge allowed us to go through this whole process with courage and hope. Especially to Dr. José Cunha who has always helped us and guided us by making all the stages possible and in the end a victory. Last and not least to our whole family for all the emotional support. Nothing is insurmountable when we have on our side the best allies… God and those who believe and work for the same goal… giving life to our life.

To finish I want to leave a word of encouragement and perseverance for all couples who wish to be parents and still haven’t made it… Don’t give up. The end will be your reward and greatest joy… realizing that you have done everything to achieve your dream. Thank you all so much.

A dream that was delayed by a tube obstruction. For two years, this became a reason of anguish, but we never lost our faith in God and the hope to fulfil such a dream. A special hug for Dr. José Cunha, a very special doctor who followed us on both successes. For us he was a doctor and a friend, who gave us strength to move on when we were feeling low. But let’s talk about joyful things… two AVA successes.

A first successful treatment in which we had our first child, a boy who is four years old today.  Two years later a second pregnancy with twins! Two boys who are now six months old. As we say in our home we have won the Euro Millions with the Jackpot!
